Victim Says Incident Has Shaken His Confidence in Airline Safety
Ankit Dewan, a passenger at Delhi Airport, has said that being physically assaulted by an off-duty Air India Express pilot has seriously shaken his trust in airport safety and airline protocols. The incident occurred on December 19, 2025, near Terminal 1 security checkpoint.
Dewan told NDTV that the altercation began after he raised objections regarding some airline staff allegedly jumping the queue. The pilot, identified as Captain Virender Sejwal, allegedly verbally abused and physically attacked Dewan, leaving him injured and bloodied.
“It has shaken my trust. Airports are supposed to be secure, and yet I faced a physical assault inside. It makes you question who is allowed to fly,” Dewan said.
Family Impacted by the Assault
Dewan was traveling with his wife, seven-year-old daughter, and four-month-old baby when the incident occurred. He said his daughter was particularly distressed initially, though he reassured her about the pilot’s arrest.
“She keeps asking how long the pilot is arrested. Initially, she was very anxious and cried easily,” Dewan said. He added that his wife has also been affected emotionally but continues to support him and has faith in the justice system.
Injuries and Medical Update
Dewan sustained a broken left nasal bone during the attack and is experiencing headaches. He noted that he initially faced difficulty using his prescription glasses, and doctors have advised that it will take approximately three to four weeks to fully recover.
Legal Proceedings and Bail
Captain Sejwal was granted bail, but Dewan expressed confidence in the law and Delhi Police. “The law will take its course,” he said, emphasizing that justice must be served.
Questions for Authorities
Dewan stated that neither Air India Express, the DGCA, nor Delhi Airport authorities have contacted him following the pilot’s bail. He has formally requested:
-
Air India Express to clarify the course of action and expected timeline for investigation closure
-
DGCA to take appropriate action in response to his complaint
-
Delhi Airport to release the CCTV footage of the incident for transparency
“One key question remains: what measures have been taken to ensure safety for parents with small children?” he asked.
