🎼 Study Uncovers the Hidden Role of the Sitar in Bollywood

A new research study at Punjabi University, Patiala has revealed the important role of the sitar in shaping Hindi film music. The research covers the period from the 1950s to the 1970s, often called Bollywood’s golden era.

The study was carried out by Vanita, under the guidance of Professor Nivedita Uppal from the Music Department. It explores how sitar melodies added emotion and depth to Hindi film songs.

📚 First-of-Its-Kind Research on Sitar in Hindi Cinema

Professor Nivedita Uppal said that this is the first detailed study focused on the sitar’s creative role in Hindi films. She explained that while singers and composers get credit for popular songs, instrumentalists like sitar players often remain unnoticed.

“This study gives long-overdue recognition to the artists whose music added beauty to many classic songs,” she shared.

🌟 Honoring Famous and Forgotten Sitar Players

The research highlights both renowned masters and lesser-known musicians. It features Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Rais Khan, as well as Jai Ram Acharya, Arvind Mayekar, and Sunil Das.

Their work brought richness to Hindi cinema’s musical heritage. Professor Uppal said that this recognition is a milestone for Punjabi University’s cultural research.

🎤 Study Emphasizes Cultural and Social Value

Researcher Vanita pointed out that the success of Hindi film music is not only due to famous music directors and singers. The skill of instrumentalists also shaped the songs that audiences still love today.

She added that this study has strong cultural value. It introduces these talented musicians to music lovers, students, and researchers. It also helps the younger generation appreciate the artists behind timeless melodies.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Jagdeep Singh praised Vanita and Prof. Uppal for their work. He said the university is committed to promoting art, culture, and literature.

He added that such studies reflect Punjabi University’s dedication to preserving India’s musical traditions.

The Music Department has also completed other major projects, such as Aman Lata’s research on Qawwali in North India.
